ULF waves: 1997 IAGA division 3 reporter review

چکیده
Highlights of studies of ULF waves from 1995 to early 1997 are presented. The subjects covered include (1) Pc 3±5 waves excited by sources in the solar wind, with emphasis on the role of the magnetospheric cavity in modifying the external source and establishing its own resonances, and the role of the plasmapause in magnetohydrodynamic wave propagation; (2) Pi 2 waves, with emphasis on the plasmaspheric resonances and possible alternative excitation by plasmasheet source waves; (3) the spatial structure of internally excited long-period waves, including a kinetic theory for radially con®ned ring current instability and groundbased multipoint observation of giant pulsations; (4) amplitude-modulated Pc 1±2 waves in the outer magnetosphere (Pc 1±2 bursts) and in the inner magnetosphere (structured Pc 1 waves or pearls); and (5) the source region of the quasi-periodic emissions. Theory and observations are compared, and controversial issues are highlighted. In addition, some future directions are suggested.

High-latitude HF Doppler observations of ULF waves. 1. Waves with large spatial scale sizes
A quantitative study of observations of the ionospheric signatures of magnetospheric ultra low frequency (ULF) waves by a high-latitude (geographic: 69.6°N 19.2°E) high-frequency Doppler sounder has been undertaken. The signatures, which are clearly correlated with pulsations in ground magnetometer data, exhibit periods in the range 100±400 s and have azimuthal wave numbers in the range 3±8. Th...

A new approach to the problem of direction and distance ®nding of magnetospheric ULF oscillations is described. It is based on additional information about the structure of geoelectromagnetic ®eld at the Earth's surface which is contained in the known relations of the theory of magnetovariation and magnetotelluric sounding. This allows us to widen the range of diagnostic tools by using observat...
متن کاملHigh-latitude HF Doppler observations of ULF waves: 2. Waves with small spatial scale sizes
The DOPE (Doppler Pulsation Experiment) HF Doppler sounder located near Tromsù, Norway (geographic: 69.6°N 19.2°E; L = 6.3) is deployed to observe signatures, in the high-latitude ionosphere, of magnetospheric ULF waves. A type of wave has been identi®ed which exhibits no simultaneous ground magnetic signature. They can be subdivided into two classes which occur in the dawn and dusk local time ...
متن کاملUse of the Wigner-Ville distribution in interpreting and identifying ULF waves in triaxial magnetic records
[1] Magnetospheric ultra-low-frequency (ULF) waves (f = 1 mHz to 1 Hz) exhibit highly time-dependent characteristics due to the dynamic properties of these waves and, for observations in space, the spacecraft motion. These time-dependent features may not be properly resolved by conventional Fourier techniques. In this study we examine how the Wigner-Ville distribution (WVD) can be used to analy...
متن کاملWavelet Analysis of Ulf Waves in the Mercury’s Magnetosphere
Ultra-low-frequency (ULF) waves have been observed in the Mercury’s magnetosphere. In this work, Mariner-10 and MESSENGER high resolution magnetic field data are studied with wavelet analysis. Two ULF wave intervals have been selected: 29 March 1974 (Mariner-10) and 14 January 2008 (MESSENGER). Non-stationary oscillations, with strong amplitude and narrow bandwidth have been found. The Mariner-...
